The Naval Academy, the training institution for all Italian Naval Officers, was created on 6 November, 1881 by the fusion of the Naval Schools of Genoa and Naples, which pre-dated the unification of Italy.
The union of the two schools was instituted by the Minister of the Navy at the time; Admiral Benedetto Brin. Brin, operating under the auspices of Camillo Benso, the Count of Cavour, sponsored the creation of a single school for the scholastic and technical education of young people with the end goal of becoming officers of the Royal Navy. The city of Livorno was selected because of its geographic location along the central coast of the newly-created Italian state.
Between 1923 and 1926, l’Accademia Navale hosted the fledgling Air Force Academy until a permanent installation was prepared.
In July of 1943, during the last World War, the “Accademia Navale” was abandoned due to bombardment. It was first relocated to Venice, and then again immediately following the armistice to Brindisi.
On 5 July 1946, the “Accademia Navale” with its moral and cultural heritage intact, returned to Livorno to resume its uninterrupted 118-year mission. The facilities had been gravely damaged and a twenty-year reconstruction and refurbishment effort was undertaken.

The “Accademia” has since expanded to an area of 21,45 hectares with 2km of coastline. the “Accademia” hosts approximately 1.250 people each year; amongst those cadets, civilians from the University of Pisa, and Officers who return to the Accademia for continuing professional education.
The curriculum for the normal course of study at the Accademia is quite similar to those found at Universities across the world. It follows a specific outline with the final objective of providing young officers the appropriate technical training, an adequate level of social, naval and historic culture, as well as broad exposure to all aspects, theoretical and practical, within their chosen field.
At the conclusion of their studies young officers earn a degree in Maritime and Naval Science (General Staff), Telecommunications Engineering (Naval Weapons Officers), Naval Engineering (Engineering Officers), Law (Logistics and Legal Officers), Political Science and Maritime Law (Coast Guard Officers), or Medicine (Medical Staff).
In addition to preparing young Officers for service in the Navy, the “Accademia” also provides advanced professional courses to Officers of all branches of the Armed Forces.
During their studies students at the “Accademia” practice several sports, however there is a particular focus on the sport of sailing.
The “Sport Velico Marina Militare” (SVMM) is a organization within the Navy with the task of developing and advocating the sport of sailing as an activity suitable for continuing maritime education. SVMM is affiliated with FIV and participates in national and international race activities.
